BV boy’s golf poised to finish at top

This could be the year the Lynx boy’s golf team climbs to the top of the podium at both conference championships and the state tournament.
“This is the year if we’re going to do it,” says Lynx head coach Scott Carroll. “I never want to say ‘we’re going to do it,’ but I should say ‘we have the opportunity’ this year.”
Carroll’s confidence stems from four of its returning varsity players in seniors Riley Duncanson, Greg Koehn and Alex Hamer, and sophomore Zane Swenson.
“We pretty much got everybody back,” Carroll said. “I have a solid corps of five guys (Duncanson, Koehn, Hamer, Swenson and Taylor Fjerestad) who are shooting really good scores right now.” Carroll also looks to seniors Carter Erickson and Thomas Siemonsma and juniors Jackson Dziedzic and Joel Kocer to make some noise in the varsity ranks this season.
And he’s also excited about the promise of freshmen Mitchell Gusso, Nathan Mutschelknaus and Lucas Schobert and seventh grader Austin Swenson.
Coming off the best finish a Brandon Valley boy’s team has ever produced at the state tournament – second place – the Lynx are predicted to be in the hunt once again this season. “I would think people would think we’re going to be a pretty strong team,” Carroll said. “It’s always nice to be under the radar a little bit, but the last four years, we’ve placed pretty well, so I think teams know that we’ll be pretty good.”
Over the last four years at state, Brandon Valley has captured second, fourth, fifth and sixth places.
“Our goals have changed,” Carroll said. “Ten, 12 years ago, our goals were a lot different than they are now. Right now, our goals are top five in the state and obviously winning the ESD championship.”
After winning back-to-back ESD titles in 2011 and 2012, the Lynx had on off day on the course last year and finished third in the nine-team competition. “Our first goal is to get that ESD championship,” he said.
Carroll anticipates the Yankton Bucks will be Brandon Valley’s biggest hurdle in winning the ESD hardware.
“Golf’s a crazy sport,” Carroll said. “You can play good or not play good, and in the ESD, we didn’t play real well and it showed. Our goal this year is to play consistent all the time, always have those guys around that low to mid-70s, because when you have five guys around that, you’re going to do a lot of damage.”
The Lynx also have their eye on winning the Metro Conference, after taking third in the five-team mix last year. Duncanson is the defending Metro Conference medalist.
Sioux Falls Lincoln is Carroll’s pick to win the Metro Conference and the Class AA state titles. O’Gorman, who is also a strong contender, graduated a handful of seniors, including one of the state’s best players in Max Donahoe.
“Lincoln’s going to be really, really good this year,” Carroll said. “They’re playing the best golf in the state right now, and with (Tommy) Vining, they’ll be tough to beat. But it just depends on how many guys they’ve got.”
Carroll said his 13-member roster (grades 7-12) of players came into the season ready to compete. “They’ve all played a lot this summer, playing a lot of tournaments … and I think that puts us at a little advantage,” Carroll said. “The first couple tournaments we’ll see what’s out there and what helps us is that we are pretty deep. A lot of teams have three guys that can score well and we have the luxury of having five or six guys that can score pretty low.”
Brandon Valley opened its 2014 season on their home course Monday when they hosted the Lynx Invite.
“Our invite has gotten bigger and has some of the top teams in the state, so it’s definitely a true test right off the bat of how teams are going to be and how we’ll compete,” Carroll said. “We start Monday and it’s definitely going to be a good eye-opener on where we sit as far as other teams go.”
Assisting Carroll this season is Todd Geerdes.
