Brandon Valley’s boy’s golf team got off to a hot start at their season opener on Aug. 18, the Lynx Invitational. Brandon Valley cruised to the title of the 10-team tournament, besting second place O’Gorman by 14 strokes.

Lynx senior Riley Duncanson was the medalist following a 4-under-par 67 performance, as Brandon Valley posted a team score of even-par 284. O’Gorman was second at 298, followed by Yankton (304) and Aberdeen Central (322). Mitchell was fifth at 326.

“It was a great start to the year,” said Lynx head coach Scott Carroll. “We have a real solid team and if we get everyone playing up to their capabilities our depth will take us a long way.”

Duncanson’s first-place finish wasn’t the only Lynx to perform well. Senior counterparts Alex Hamer and Greg Koehn, and junior Taylor Fjerestad finished in the top five of the 60-golfer meet. Hamer’s 69 landed him third place, while Koehn and Fjerestad both finished with 74s to tie for fifth place.

“Riley, Alex and Greg are playing great golf and are really motivated to finish their senior year strong,” Carroll said.

A trio of Lynx golfers finished in the top-half of the group. Junior Jackson Dziedzic carded back-to-back 41s for an 82 and tie for 19th. Freshman Nathan Mutschelknaus also came in with a pair of 42s for his 84 total and tie for 26th. Finally, sophomore Zane Swenson shot a 44 on the front nine and followed up with a 41 for an 85, tying for 29th.

Carroll was also pleased with the effort of Fjerestad, Swenson, Erickson and Dziedzic. “Taylor, Zane, Carter and Jackson are also motivated to help this team compete with any team in the state. These guys are also excellent for the younger group of kids that we have. They see the success that our team is having and that makes them want to get better and motivates them,” he said.

This Friday, the Lynx head to the Huron Invitational, and next week will go up against a series of Sioux Falls programs. Brandon Valley will play Roosevelt at Prairie Green on Labor Day, and on Sept. 2, they’ll take in a triangular with Lincoln and O’Gorman.

“We are taking each match one at a time and trying to focus on task at hand with the big picture of finishing well at state and ESD in the back of our heads,” Carroll said, “But I was very pleased how they started off.”
