Ignorance is no excuse when it comes to breaking the law. The same is true for city ordinances.
Make sure you know your rights and responsibilities by keeping up to date from your own home or office. The entire codified laws of Brandon are available online at www.brandonsd.com.
In the meantime, here are the answers to some common questions:
Q: What is the curfew for minors in Brandon?
A: Youth younger than 18 years old must not be out between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. There are a few exceptions. Minors may be out if they are with a parent or guardian, or if they are sent on an emergency errand or legitimate business by a parent or guardian. The curfew also allows minors one-half hour to get home after the dismissal of a church, school, club or other adult-sponsored event, if that time conflicts with curfew time. Minors who violate the curfew may be detained by police, who will notify their parent or guardian.
Q: Does my pet need a license? Where do I get one? Does Brandon have a leash law?
A: All dogs and cats older than 6 months old need a license, which can be obtained at City Hall, 305 Main Ave. Pets must be vaccinated for rabies before a license will be issued. Animals must be fenced, leashed or staked when they are on their owner’s property. Off the property, they must be leashed. There may not be more than three domestic pets in any household, although it is OK to have more than three birds or fish. Exotic animals are not allowed.
Q: Must I trim my trees?
A: Yes, you must. If your tree hangs over a sidewalk, you must trim it to a minimum of 8 feet above the ground. If your tree hangs over a street, you must trim it to a minimum of 14 feet above the ground. If your tree hangs over a street that is a truck thoroughfare, you must trim it to a minimum of 16 feet above the ground. If you want to plant a tree in the grass between a sidewalk and the street, you must first get a permit from City Hall, 305 Main Ave.
Q: Is it legal to park my boat/camper/trailer on the street in front of my house?
A: Yes, but only if it is attached to a motor vehicle, and only up to 72 hours. After 72 hours, it will be considered abandoned and you could be subject to a fine.
Q: What is the speed limit in residential areas?
A: 25 miles per hour unless posted otherwise. In school zones and city parks, the speed limit is 15 miles per hour unless posted otherwise.
Q: What about everything else?
A: The city’s Web site, www.brandonsd.com, is a great reference tool. Or call City Hall at 582-6515.
