Brian Mielke of Brandon likes to immerse himself in an author’s works before moving on to read another author. Recently, he checked out “Fatal Voyage,” a mystery suspense novel by Kathy Reichs, from the Brandon Community Library.
“My whole family uses (the library) extensively,” he said. He estimated his family checks out between 100 and 150 books a year.
Brandon Community Library is a branch of Siouxland Libraries, which serves Sioux Falls and Minnehaha County. The Brandon library facility is connected to Brandon Valley High School, 305 S. Splitrock Blvd., and has separate parking and entrance for the public.
Construction of the library building in 2003 was paid for with federal and state grants, city funds and donations. The Brandon Valley School District maintains the structure.
The Siouxland Libraries system has 12 branches and two bookmobiles. The Brandon branch has computers where patrons can search the entire system’s library catalog. Any item can be brought to Brandon to be checked out, and items can be dropped off at any branch. The library catalog also can be accessed online at www.siouxlandlib.org. The site includes a wide range of other information as well, including a list of upcoming library events, patron account information and book club news.
Because the library serves the school and the public, a computer area is set aside for school study hall use, but patrons may use any area. Peggy Lind, a librarian who works at the Brandon branch as well as other Siouxland Libraries branches, said students and other patrons often work side by side at tables and computers.
Other areas of the library have sofas and upholstered chairs, where patrons may relax and read. Sometimes women sit and knit at the library, Lind said.
The library has a conference room that seats up to a dozen people, and it can be reserved. Preschool storytime takes place in another room, which also includes children’s books and kid-size tables. A castle-shaped puppet theater allows children to be creative.
In addition to Brandon and four locations in Sioux Falls, Siouxland Libraries has branches in Baltic, Colton, Crooks, Garretson, Hartford-West Central, Humboldt and Valley Springs.
The Brandon Community Library is open Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., from September through May. From June through August, the library is open Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The library is closed on Sunday. The phone number is 582-2390.
