Child Care

November 26. 2014 1:55AM
There are many quality day care providers in Brandon, from large centers to small in-home providers.

Do your homework to find the right one.

Child-development experts advise the following:
• Visit and interview prospective providers in person. Bring your child along to make sure he or she is comfortable with the provider.

• Check to see that the facility is clean and play areas are safe.

•Observe other children. Are they happy? Do they have enough room to roam? Do they have age-appropriate toys?

• Ask the provider if he or she is a registered family child care provider or operates a licensed child care center.

• Observe the caregiver. Is she or he friendly, responsive to children, in good health and able to keep up with the children?

• Does the caregiver interact with babies other than at feeding time? Wash hands frequently, especially after changing diapers? Offer planned activities for older children other than watching television? What is the discipline policy?

• Make sure nutritious meals and snacks are provided. If your child needs naps, ask whether there is a scheduled rest time.

• Check references and ask for information from other parents who have used the provider.

• If you want to know whether the provider has CPR and first aid certification, you can check with the South Dakota Department of Social Services, Division of Child Care Services office in Sioux Falls at 367-7602 or toll free 866-801-5421. They keep files on providers who supervise 13 or more children.
